Bautizos/Baptisms
Most baptisms occur before the child is one year old, but some people choose to do them later (throughout childhood and even adulthood). This event is meant to bring together friends and family to dedicate a child to God and bring about peace, understanding, and unify parents, godparents, and the child to help the child have an amazing life with a great support system.
Babies are dressed in white gowns, traditionally, and the parents ask a man and a woman to be the padrinos (godparents) and a special party follows the ceremony. Mariachi bands are incredibly common—if not traditional—for the parties following the baptism ceremony. Some families also choose to bring in a mariachi for the ceremony itself. As with any other Catholic church-based ceremony, a mariachi can add a nice fun twist as well as a large splash of culture and tradition.
A lot of parents choose white decorations to symbolize the purity and innocence of their child and their devotion to the Lord. Some parents opt to use white with blue or pink decorations, focusing on white.
Many baptisms will have very large families present, so small children through grandparents or great-grandparents will be present. This is why entertainment is so important if you’re having a post-bautizo celebration. It can be hard to find something to entertain everyone, but a mariachi is a perfect choice!
