Cinco de Mayo is celebrated throughout the US, not just the Hispanic community. So this May 5th, let’s all remember what Cinco de Mayo means, and not just use it as an excuse to put on a sombrero, eat tacos, and drink tequila or Corona. So start cooking those tamales, bring out the decorations, and start planning now before our Mariachi are all booked and you’re left with a choice: no Mariachi or a group that isn’t the best in the Tucson area.
This year, throw an amazing party for Cinco de Mayo with authentic Mariachi performances, but let’s not forget the reason this is such a celebrated holiday in the first place!
May 5th celebrates Mexico’s defeat of France in 1862 during the Battle of Puebla in the Franco-Mexican War. While not always celebrated in large numbers as it is in the US, Americans and Mexican-Americans use Cinco de Mayo to celebrate Mexican heritage and history with parades, Mariachi, festivals, and other celebrations.
In Mexico, the state of Puebla celebrated Cinco de Mayo with much more vigor than the rest of the country, holding military parades, battle recreations, and other celebratory events. It’s an important day in history but it isn’t considered a federal holiday.
In the US Cinco de Mayo started becoming popular when activists raised awareness in the 60’s. The day is celebrated with parties, Mariachi performances, folk dancing, food, and parades. Areas with higher concentrations of Hispanic residents tend to throw the largest parties.
Don’t get Cinco de Mayo confused with Mexican Independence day (September 16) but feel free to use this day to show your friends and neighbors just how amazing Mexican culture is with a block party, church gathering, house party, pool party, or more. Throw in a Mariachi performance for a little extra fun at an affordable price. Mariachi Alegre de Tucson will gladly perform at your Cinco de Mayo celebration. We offer authentic music performed by trained and skilled musicians who love their work and would love to help spread awareness of Mexican culture to this beautiful country.
Act fast! Cinco de Mayo is 10 days away! If you can’t throw a Cinco de Mayo party on May 10th (a Tuesday, sadly) maybe consider throwing one next weekend with a Cinco de Mayo theme. Next week we’ll talk about some party ideas for your Cinco de Mayo festivities. So in the meantime, keep reading our blogs, make your reservations now, and get to party planning!
We are also available for Mother’s day performances, graduation parties, birthday parties, weddings, funerals, and more. If you’re having a celebration or party it can be made even better with professional Mariachi who will play with a smile and high energy to make your party memorable!
